Reports seems to point that MediaTek plans to launch two new SoC products using the 28 nm manufacturing process by the first quarter of 2013...
MT6588 chipset will feature a quad-core ARM Cortex™-A7 processor running at 1.5 GHz or 1.7 GHz. This chipset will support WCDMA and TD-SCDMA (used by China Mobile) network technologies.
Thanks to the integrated PowerVR™ SGX 544 GPU, it will also feature support for up to 1280×800 pixel displays, 1080p video playback and up to 13 megapixels cameras.

Aside from the new quad-core chipset, MediaTek will also release the dual-core MT6583, which will likewise run at either 1.5 GHz or 1.7 GHz. This one will support a resolution of up to 854×480, meaning it will target a different market segment, particularly lower-end to mid-range devices.

Additionally, MediaTek's general manager was cited to say that the company is focusing on including LTE support in its chipsets, which can enable smartphone manufacturers to release lower-priced handsets that support this technology.
I just do not understand this resolution on 6583 chipsets. if the 6575 and 6577 already are capable of HD resolution, why not this newer chipset (with new GPU, larger RAM bandwith)? are the A7 much worse than A9 (even with higher clocks)?
ReplyDeleteI guess those are just the recommended display resolutions. If you look again to the table, you'll notice that both MT6575 and MT6577 chipsets support qHD resolution... Although, there are some phones based on those chipsets with higher resolutions. An example of that is ZOPO ZP300 (MT6575) which features HD resolution.

ReplyDeleteIf I read correct the A7 is not intended as a standalone CPU, but as a energy efficient little brother to the A15. In big.LITTLE configuration, so either the most energy efficient core, or the most powerful core is selected for each workload. Or both.
Using two (or four) A7's by itself is a stroke of genius, or going to be a drag. Because the A7 by itself is not faster than the A9 of the 6575. But a lot more energy efficient, so at least the battery likes it. Of course, at 1.5GHz a 6583 will of course still outperform a 1GHz 6577, but probably not by much. And the 4 core 6588 will only be faster for certain applications that need/use 4 cores.
Still round about 2013 I am probably ready for a new phone, so we will see.
I am not that technically sound to comment on design and features but as a normal user I can certainly say that I do not like the performance of phones running on Media tek chipsets.
